The Perfect Kenya Safari & Beach Itinerary (7 or 10 Days)

Planning a Kenya safari means making decisions about timing, destinations, and logistics. After designing hundreds of successful Kenya trips, we've identified two formulas that work exceptionally well: a 7-day safari-focused itinerary, and a 10-day itinerary that adds the coast.

Here's exactly how each works.

Choosing Your Duration: 7 or 10 Days

7-Day Itinerary (Safari Only): 3 nights Nairobi, 2 nights Maasai Mara, 2 nights return to Nairobi. Focuses exclusively on wildlife and cultural experiences. Ideal for travelers prioritizing safari over beach, or those with limited vacation time.

10-Day Itinerary (Safari + Beach): 2 nights Nairobi, 3 nights Maasai Mara, 3-4 nights coast. Balances wildlife viewing with coastal relaxation. Our most popular option for first-time visitors seeking the complete Kenya experience.

The 7-Day Safari Itinerary

Days 1-3: Nairobi (3 Nights)

Day 1: Evening arrival, transfer to hotel, overnight rest.

Day 2: Full day for jet lag recovery and Nairobi exploration.

Activities: David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage (11am-12pm only—arrive by 10:45am), Giraffe Centre, Kitengela Glass studio, Maasai Market, optional coffee plantation tour.

Day 3: Morning at leisure. Midday departure for Maasai Mara.

Days 4-5: Maasai Mara (2 Nights / 3 Full Days)

Transport Options:

Fly: 45 minutes from Wilson Airport. Saves 10+ hours road travel. Recommended.

Drive: 5-6 hours via Rift Valley. More economical, scenic but long on rough roads.

Day 3 (Arrival): Arrive Mara for lunch, afternoon game drive (4pm-7pm). 1 drive

Day 4 (Full Day): Morning drive (6am-9:30am) + afternoon drive (4pm-7pm). 2 drives

Day 5 (Full Day): Morning drive (6am-9:30am) + afternoon drive (4pm-7pm). 2 drives

Total: 5 game drives. Wildlife includes Big Five, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest. July-October: Great Migration.

Optional: Hot air balloon safari (advance booking required).

Days 6-7: Return to Nairobi (2 Nights)

Day 6: Morning drive (6am-9:30am), late breakfast, depart Mara midday. Arrive Nairobi afternoon/evening.

Day 7: Day at leisure. Optional: Nairobi National Park, Bomas of Kenya, shopping. Evening international departure (9pm-midnight flights).

The 10-Day Safari + Beach Itinerary

Days 1-2: Nairobi (2 Nights)

Day 1: Evening arrival, transfer to hotel, overnight rest.

Day 2: Morning recovery from jet lag. Afternoon visit to David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage (Pro tip: Opens 11am-12pm only—one hour daily. Arrive by 10:45am), Giraffe Centre, or Kitengela Glass. Overnight Nairobi.

Days 3-6: Maasai Mara (3 Nights / 4 Full Days)

Transport: Flying strongly recommended for 10-day itinerary—saves time for coast. Driving adds 12 hours total, reducing beach days.

Day 3 (Arrival): Fly to Mara midday, lunch, afternoon drive. 1 drive

Days 4-5 (Full Days): Each day: morning drive (6am-9:30am) + afternoon drive (4pm-7pm). 4 drives total

Day 6 (Departure): Morning drive (6am-9:30am), breakfast, fly to Nairobi, connect to coast same afternoon. 1 drive

Total: 6 game drives over 4 days

Days 7-9: Kenya Coast (3 Nights)

Day 6 (Travel Day): Morning game drive in the Mara (6am-9:30am), return to camp for breakfast. Depart Mara on midday flight (typically 11am-12pm departure), arrive Wilson Airport Nairobi around 1pm. Connect to coast-bound flight departing 2-3pm.

Flight options:

  • Nairobi to Mombasa (for Diani Beach): 1 hour flight, then 45-minute road transfer south to Diani

  • Nairobi to Malindi (for Watamu): 1 hour 15 minute flight, then 20-minute transfer to Watamu

Arrive at your beach resort between 4-5pm. Evening at leisure to settle in.

Day 7 (Full Beach Day): Your first full day on the coast. This is primarily a recovery and decompression day after four days of early morning wake-ups and game drives.

Optional activities:

  • Relax on white-sand beaches with turquoise Indian Ocean waters

  • Swimming and beach walks

  • Resort pool and spa facilities

  • Simply rest and recharge

Day 8 (Coastal Culture & Activities):

Kenya's coast offers a distinct cultural experience shaped by centuries of Swahili civilization—a unique blend of African, Arab, Persian, and Indian influences.

Cultural Activities (Location-Specific):

From Diani Beach:

  • Swahili Cooking Class: Available at select Diani resorts (on-property, no travel required)

  • Ukunda Town: Local town 10 minutes from Diani for markets and authentic street food—small scale, not a major cultural destination

  • Mombasa Old Town & Fort Jesus: 1.5 hours north by road (can be traffic-heavy). Full half-day excursion. Worth it for history enthusiasts, but factor in 3+ hours round-trip travel plus tour time.

  • Shimba Hills National Reserve: 30 minutes from Diani, offers forest walks and elephant viewing (alternative to beach day)

From Watamu:

  • Gede Ruins: 20 minutes away, 13th-century Swahili town ruins, fascinating archaeological site

  • Local Watamu Village: Walking distance from most resorts, authentic coastal life and markets

  • Malindi Old Town: 20 minutes north, smaller historic area with Swahili architecture and Vasco da Gama pillar

  • Mombasa (Fort Jesus/Old Town): 2 hours south—long journey, typically not recommended for 3-night Watamu stays

Marine Activities (Both Locations):

  • Snorkeling/Diving: Diani and Watamu both have protected marine national parks with vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, dolphins, and tropical fish. Boat trips depart directly from beach areas.

  • Dhow Sailing: Traditional wooden sailing boats—sunset dhow cruises (2-3 hours) or full-day sailing excursions

  • Glass-Bottom Boat Tours: View marine life without getting wet, excellent for families

  • Kitesurfing (Diani): Diani is East Africa's kitesurfing hub with consistent winds

Realistic Activity Planning:

Most travelers staying at Diani do NOT venture to Mombasa due to distance and traffic. The journey to Mombasa Old Town/Fort Jesus takes 1.5 hours each way (3+ hours total) plus tour time—this consumes most of a beach day. Unless you're a serious history enthusiast, the beach, marine activities, and resort experiences are typically more valuable for a 3-night stay.

Watamu offers better proximity to cultural sites (Gede Ruins 20 minutes away, walkable village access).

What Makes Kenya's Coast Unique:

Unlike generic beach destinations, Kenya's coast delivers cultural depth alongside natural beauty. The Swahili coast has been a global trading crossroads for over 1,000 years. You'll hear Kiswahili spoken everywhere (the lingua franca of East Africa), taste cuisine influenced by Arab spice traders, see architectural styles blending African and Islamic design, and experience a laid-back coastal culture distinct from inland Kenya.

The coast isn't just "beach after safari"—it's a distinct cultural region with its own identity, history, and traditions.

Day 9 (Departure Day): Morning at beach. Enjoy final swim and breakfast at resort.

Travel logistics:

  • Check out from resort around 11am-12pm

  • Transfer to Mombasa or Malindi airport (45 minutes from Diani, 20 minutes from Watamu)

  • Coast to Nairobi flight: Typically departs 1-2pm, arrives Nairobi 2-3pm

  • Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (30-45 minutes from Wilson Airport)

  • International flights typically depart Nairobi between 9pm-midnight

  • You'll have 5-6 hours at Nairobi airport area before departure—most travelers use airport lounges or nearby airport hotels with day rooms

This timing allows a full morning at the beach without stress about catching your international flight.

Choosing Your Beach: Diani vs. Watamu

Diani Beach (Mombasa):

  • Wider range of resort options (mid-range to luxury)

  • Excellent swimming beaches

  • Best for families and groups

  • More developed infrastructure

Watamu (Malindi):

  • Boutique properties, more intimate

  • World-class snorkeling and diving in marine national park

  • Ideal for couples

  • Quieter, less commercial

Hidden Costs to Budget For

Budget for these additional expenses beyond the safari package price:

Gratuities (Essential):

  • Safari guide: $20-30 per person per day

  • Safari camp staff: $10-15 per person per day

  • Beach resort staff: $5-10 per person per day

  • Total for 10-day trip: $400-600 per person

Optional Activities:

  • Hot air balloon safari: $550-600

  • Nairobi National Park entrance: $50

  • Beach water sports: $50-150 per activity

  • Spa treatments: $80-300

  • Souvenirs: $200-500

  • Extra Nairobi meals: $50-100 per meal

Drive vs. Fly: Making the Right Choice

Choose Flying If:

  • You're doing the 10-day itinerary (maximizes beach time)

  • You value comfort and efficiency over cost savings

  • You have limited vacation time

  • You want to minimize physical fatigue before safari

  • You're traveling with children or elderly family members

Choose Driving If:

  • You're doing the 7-day safari-only itinerary

  • Budget is a primary concern ($400-700 savings per person)

  • You enjoy road trips and scenic routes

  • You want to experience the Rift Valley landscape

  • You're comfortable with 5-6 hours on rough roads (one way)

Our recommendation: Fly for 10-day itineraries, either option works for 7-day safari-focused trips.

Why These Itineraries Work

Efficient routing: Internal flights save 10-12 hours of road travel, converting transit time into safari and beach experiences.

Proper pacing: Both itineraries include buffer days in Nairobi for jet lag recovery, preventing exhaustion during wildlife viewing.

Proven structure: The 7-day focuses on depth of safari experience. The 10-day adds coastal relaxation without feeling rushed.

Single-country simplicity: One visa, one currency, no border crossings. All logistics handled within Kenya.

Customization

Both itineraries can be adjusted to your preferences:

Family travel: Diani Beach offers the best family-friendly resort infrastructure. Most Mara camps accommodate children ages 6 and above.

Migration timing: July through October is peak Great Migration season. Consider adding an extra Mara day for increased river crossing opportunities.
